Bird flu inspections increased
20/10/2005 7:41

Shanghai Daily news

Travelers arriving in the city from areas hit by the bird flu should expect to have their bags inspected at the airport as Shanghai tries to prevent the spread of the fatal virus.
The city will also step up inspections of all poultry products entering the city, particularly those from flu-stricken areas, the Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau announced yesterday.
To date the bird flu has been reported in several parts of Asia and recently in a group of European countries.
China has currently suspended the import of any poultry goods from Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria.
All animal product containers must be opened for inspection, including those from countries that have not been hit by the bird flu. Twenty percent of poultry goods from non-flu-stricken areas will also be tested.
The bureau will also increase spot checks of other goods from the flu-stricken areas, and more bags belonging to passengers from those countries will be inspected to ensure they contain no poultry products. Any poultry found will be destroyed.
