Cai Wenjun/Shanghai Daily news

Men's health hot lines, including a line for university students, were launched yesterday in the city to mark the National Male Health Day.
Ten male health education centers were also inaugurated.
The men's hot line is 6474-9014; the hot line for male university students is 6465-9922 - it also helps women.
Men's health status in the city and nationwide is not as high as that of women. Men are less likely to seek out health professionals for general health and reproductive health issues.
The city's male population has a lower health status with a higher mortality and a shorter life span than the females. Local male life span in 2004 was 78.08 years, 4.4 years less than women.
Take sexually transferred diseases as an example. The number of male HIV carriers in China is twice that of females. In Shanghai, men are 3.4 times more likely to be carriers than women.
Experts said high pressure, improper lifestyle and neglect of health are the main causes of men's health problems.
In the city, many men don't visit doctors for small symptoms. For problems with the reproductive system, they are more reluctant than women to contact professionals.
To further enhance people's awareness and knowledge of health care, the new male health education centers will provide professional consultation on sex and reproductive information.
