Italy expects to help the city develop its fashion design industry and soccer skills, the mayor of Milan said during a visit to the city yesterday.
Gabriele Albertini also said Milan's air authority will talk to its local counterpart about increasing the frequency of direct flights between the two cities in the future.
"We have been fully aware of the huge potential of the Chinese market and expect to see a two-way-street of economic development," Albertini told Shanghai Daily during an interview yesterday.
He explained that Milan will arrange a special fashion exhibition in the city next year to enhance its collaboration with local designers.
It will also provide various training programs to exchange its techniques and experience in fashion design with local designers.
"Our eventual purpose is to make China not only capable of manufacturing labor-intensive fashion products but also able to develop its own innovative brands," he said.
He said about 500 years ago, Milan was the world's leading city in terms of silk consumption and most silk was imported from China through the ancient Silk Road.
Albertini, a soccer fan who supports AC Milan, said his city plans to establish a long-term cooperation plan between the juvenile teams of Inter Milan and Shanghai Shenhua.
He said the two sides are planning to have a friendly match at first and then Milan expects to provide its soccer expertise to the young generation of Chinese soccer players.
He also expressed hopes to set up a juvenile soccer training base in Shanghai to improve the overall skills of Chinese players.
Albertini arrived in Shanghai yesterday with a 50-member-delegation for a four-day visit to mark the 25th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Shanghai and Milan.
