Developing renewable energy sources as local conditions allow is an integral part of sustainable energy  development in Shanghai, said Shanghai municipal government spokesperson Jiao Yang at yesterday's scheduled government press conference.

One development project involves the building of a large-scale wind-power plant at sea, intended to generate 0.2 to 0.3 million kilowatts of electricity by 2010. A solar energy development plan will also be implemented. By 2010, 7 to 10 megawatts of solar photovoltaic electricity will be generated.

The government will also support enterprises looking to develop renewable energy, such as solar cells and hydrogen battery-powered buses.

Shanghai will complete the independent development of battery-powered buses before 2008. By 2012, over 10 thousand battery-powered buses are expected to have been produced, Jiao Yang said in answer to a question about strategies for promoting new energy.
