The year-end rush to buy new cars pushed up the price of license plates at the city's monthly auction over the weekend after an unexpected drop in prices last month, Shanghai Daily reported. 

The average winning price for a plate at the auction was 38,460 yuan (US$4,808), an increase of 561 yuan from last month, according to Shanghai International Commodity.
