Six man-made lakes will be constructed in Pudong by 2010 in order to connect rivers in the area and improve water quality.

The basic idea is to build a connected river passage so that fish and other living beings can move freely in the area. The increasing life diversity can improve the ecological system and purify the water naturally, said Sun Shengnan, an official with the Pudong New Area Environmental Protection Bureau.
