The city had nine Grade 3, or "slightly polluted," days in January, three times last year's monthly average, the environmental bureau said yesterday, Shanghai Daily reported.

Last month also had one Grade 4 day - January 19 - only the second in seven years.

The bureau measures air quality in grades. Grade 1 represents the best air quality and Grade 5 the worst.
