The city has taken a series of precautionary measures before the flood season
-- which runs from June until September -- to ensure the safety of the residents
and minimalize possible economic losses.
The city government has invested 18.55 million yuan (US$2.46 million) ahead
of the flood season in upgrading the local storm drainage system to end the
situation of some public sites being frequently under water in heavy, continuous
rainstorms.
Outdoor billboards that may fall down during a typhoon have been demolished.
Enterprises in Chongming Island and Changxing Island in the estuary of the
Yangtze River, have started building up disaster-prevention sites and putting
together detailed plans to look after residents in case of floods.
The Shanghai Flood Control Headquarters has improved the drainage information
system by adding 20 monitoring sites to the already existing 22 sites to allow
officials to better supervise the flooding situation citywide and take measures
to prevent possible disasters.
Two to three typhoons may occur in the wet season this year, the Shanghai
Flood Control Headquarters and the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau warned at a
joint press conference yesterday.
