The city will set up a real-time monitoring system on Chongming Island to keep tabs on the encroachment of salt water and other environmental risks, officials announced yesterday, Shanghai Daily reported. 

Information collected from the system will be used to help the city government create new policies to protect the island's ecology, researchers said.
