Han meets Wisconsin Governor

Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng met an American trade delegation led by Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle at the Radisson Plaza Xing Guo Hotel yesterday morning.

Han said that Shanghai has witnessed sustainable and sound economic growth thanks to the reform and opening-up policy. Residents¡¯average incomes and living standards have been greatly enhanced.

With an overall improvement in housing, social security and education, local government now pay much attention to the city¡¯s sustainable development and strive for energy saving and environmental protection, Han said.

Han introduced to the US delegation to the 2007 Special Olympics and 2010 World Expo that will be held in Shanghai. He expressed his wish for a successful Special Olympics, which will show the utmost care from all of society for the mentally challenged. Han also said that 166 countries and international organizations have confirmed they will participate in the Expo. The number of participants is expected to reach 170 by the end of this year and the ultimate goal will be 200.

Han and Doyle both said they would appreciate closer economic and trade cooperation between Shanghai and Wisconsin. The United States has invested in more than 5,500 projects in Shanghai.

Doyle said that the trade volume between Shanghai and Wisconsin has increased by 60 percent since his visit to Shanghai three years ago.
