In response to Premier Wen Jiaobao¡¯s call to clean up government at a special
meeting of his new Cabinet yesterday, Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng yesterday vowed
to vigorously combat corruption.
Han pointed out that harmful practices and corruption did exist in some
departments. He demanded that the government prescribe heavy penalties for party
members who violated laws and discipline.
Han also said the government should put a stop to corruption by taking some
precautionary measures.
Han called for an effective supervision system to ensure government affairs
were transparent. He encouraged the public to participate in governmental policy
making.
He said an improved investigation mechanism was on schedule to define
responsibilities and to examine leaders in key fields in charge of key funds.
