Pudong International Airport has begun to cut food and product prices about 25 percent to match those in the city¡¯s Metro stations, a newspaper reported today.

Prices in the city¡¯s two airports have always been inflated compared to other places. The price of mineral water would be double that of supermarkets.

The airport has dropped prices on 200 kinds of food by 28 percent and 100 categories of products by 22 percent, the Youth Daily said.

The airport has required 12 shops to slash prices, the report said, citing an official of the airport who is in charge retail businesses. He said the airport would check prices frequently to ensure shop owners are following the rules.

The airport planned to cut prices of another 500 categories of commodities in two months as the second batch of 18 airline companies will move to Terminal Two on April 29, the official added.

The airport will categorize the restaurants and adjust prices based on various standards, said the official.

The airport will adjust the prices of bottom-level restaurants to match those at the city¡¯s South Railway Station, Zhongshan Park Metro Station and traffic hubs, he said.

Mid-level restaurants will match prices according to those in downtown areas.

The price of high-level restaurants will be required to be kept in line with those at four-star hotels.

The airport plans to build a 10,000-squre-meter shopping area for cheap restaurants and discounted clothes between the two terminals, the report said, citing the official.

Terminal Two opened on March 26. Pudong airport can now handle an annual passenger flow of about 60 million people, more than double its previous capacity, previous reports said.
