A suspect who allegedly defrauded 6.44 million yuan (US$938,776) from relatives of his wife by creating a bogus World Expo vehicle lease project was yesterday transferred to the prosecutors' office by Shanghai's Baoshan District police.

Yang Dan, 48, a former taxi driver, was accused of swindling the money from 10 victims, including his wife and his parents-in-law, between 2003 and 2006. The biggest victim in the alleged scam was the sister of Yang's mother-in-law, who lost more than 1.8 million yuan.
