Two octogenarian women cheer as they reach the top of Sheshan Hill in
Shanghai yesterday. The mountainclimbing activity, attracting more than 1,000
senior citizens from the city, was a tradition to celebrate yesterday¡¯s Double
Ninth Festival, which is also known as Seniors¡¯Day. Other celebrations included
buying specially made cakes for the elderly to show respect. China has 153
million people aged 60 and above, or about 11 percent of the total population.
By 2020, the number will rise to 248 million.¡ªShanghai Daily
