Cui Jian, the "Father of Chinese Rock," is one of the few musicians from his time who has always stayed active. After a small invite-only concert two years ago, he will be back in Shanghai tomorrow for a free outdoor concert at Daning International Community.
Cui became famous after a charity concert in Beijing in 1986, in which he performed his most famous song, "I Have Nothing", dressed as an old peasant. The song soon swept through campuses and Cui has since become a cultural icon.
Cui also played a rocker and wrote a movie score in Zhang Yuan's famous independent film "Beijing Bastards" about a group of painters, musicians and art students living on the edge. Almost all Chinese rock singers today still consider him a role model.
For most of his 20-odd years in the industry, the 47-year-old musician successfully kept his private life a secret. Many fans didn't even know that he was married, and he has had a scandal-free career.
After he released his most recent album in 2005, Cui has been touring around the country, often as the headline act.
