Sculptures from around the world will be on show at Shanghai's first steel sculpture park in Baoshan District for a month from next Tuesday.
Artists from the United States, Russia, Canada, Japan and China have created about 190 sculptures in steel, including big names such as Ai Weiwei and Zhan Wang.
The theme of tools symbolizes the civilization of mankind, said Han Lu, one of the organizers of the 2008 Shanghai International Steel Sculpture Art Festival.
"It also explores the relationships between human history, different regions, and social life with metallic materials."
Established in November 2007, the festival is also the first of its kind in China.
Zhang Qing, the curator of the 2008 Shanghai Biennale, said: "The whole scene at the park is akin to a public kaleidoscope made of steel."
After the show ends, a few sculptures will be collected by Shanghai Urban Sculpture Center and Shanghai Art Gallery.
The steel sculpture park is at 101 Changjiang Road W.
