Lu Feiran/Shanghai Daily news
Heavy fog shut down shipping at the mouth of the Yangtze River from Thursday evening through yesterday morning.
Dense fog started to blanket the city Thursday afternoon, prompting the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau to issue a yellow fog alert at 4pm, the lowest level on a three-color scale. The alert was not lifted until 4am yesterday.
More than 200 international vessels had to cancel or delay entry or departure at Shanghai's three ports, officials said. The visibility at the mouth of the river was below 1,000 meters ¡§- and even less than 200 meters in some areas.
Ferry services to Chongming, Hengsha and Changxing island were suspended from Thursday night to early yesterday morning. Long-distance buses and flights, however, were not greatly affected.
