Bacteria high in some food products

Some brands of sugar-free wafers and pickled turnips in Shanghai markets contain unsafe levels of bacteria, according to local quality inspectors.
A recent inspection revealed that four out of 52 varieties of sugar-free snacks, including the lemon-flavored Qiaoxin wafer produced by the Shanghai Guping Industry Co Ltd, were found to contain colon bacillus. The bacteria can cause stomach trouble and diarrhea, Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision officials said.
Bureau officials also warned that manufacturers may use additives when producing "sugar-free" snacks. Companies often label their products as "cane sugar free" which could mean that other forms like grape sugar could have been used. Such snacks are not advisable for diabetes patients, officials said.
The bureau also tested pickled vegetables at the local markets. Twelve out of 81 varieties were found to have a high bacteria count. Mimao pickled turnips made by Xiaoshan Hezhuang Pickle Vegetable Co Ltd was one of the tainted brands.
