Yang Jian/Shanghai Daily news It's a clean, green
house from the host city. Shanghai will present a 3,000-square-meter
environmentally friendly house, run solely on renewable energy, at the 2010
World Expo. The city signed an Urban Best Practices Area participation
contract with Expo organizers yesterday and said its pavilion would be a
multi-story "Eco House." The building will be powered by solar and wind
energy. It will be geo-thermally heated so that its carbon footprint remains
zero. Residents will be able to monitor the house and even control appliances
when they are away through computers or mobile phones. The house will have
several model rooms designed for different kinds of families ¡§(r) married
couples, those with children and senior citizens. The "Eco House" is a direct
interpretation of the "Better City, Better Life" Expo theme, said Qin Yun, a
coordinator for the Shanghai section. An exhibition hall will be built at an
underground level to showcase the history of Shanghai's development of
residential buildings. Provisions have been made for film shows too, Qin
said. The construction of the house began at the Puxi section of the Expo
site on September 10. The idea was inspired by the successful operation of
three environmentally friendly buildings in the Xinzhuang Industrial Zone in
Shanghai's Minhang District. The buildings, the first of their kind in China,
were built in 2004 by the Shanghai Research Institute of Building Sciences. The
Urban Best Practices Area will feature advanced technologies and innovative
ideas that can help contribute to a "better life."
