Shanghai Unicom said yesterday it has trained some of its employees in
sign language to better serve the city's 200,000 speech- and hearing-impaired
residents. "We asked officials from the Shanghai Disabled Person's Federation
to teach our staff the signs appropriate for handling telephone services,"
Shanghai Unicom said in a statement. In the past, disabled people could
communicate with phone company staff only in writing. According to the
federation, the city has nearly 200,000 people who can't speak or hear. The
city's No. 2 mobile operator is also negotiating with fire, medical and police
hot lines to provide a new emergency service to people who can't use a
phone. If the talks are successful, disabled people would be able to apply
for the company's special short message service. The SMS system is being
designed to allow a user to send an emergency message to a special number, which
automatically connects with local emergency hot lines.
