Shanghai Daily news
A dense fog covered parts of
Shanghai yesterday morning, forcing a few highways to be closed and causing
traffic jams on several expressways. The fog was focused in the southwestern
part of the city and forced weathermen to sound a red fog alert at 7:42am, as
visibility was less than 200 meters. The alert wasn't lifted until nearly three
hours later. In qingpu District, where the fog was most dense, visibility was
down to 30 meters, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau. The fog
forced police to close several highways starting at 2:24am. The
shanghai-Hangzhou Highway was most heavily affected. It was entirely closed for
about eight hours. Sections of several other highways were later closed. All
highways were opened at 10:19am, according to the Shanghai Road Administrative
Office. Officials said they didn't receive any reports of accidents caused by
fog on the highway. However, the fog still produced congestion on the
highways, according to drivers. No fog is forecast for the weekend, but
temperatures are expected to drop a little.
