A 23-year-old woman was killed in the People's Square on Valentine's Day by a
local man she met online because the victim said she wanted to break up with
him. According to neighbors of the suspect, the man attempted to commit
suicide at his home in Pudong New Area yesterday morning. His family reportedly
discovered him in time and immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital. "He
survived following emergency treatment," said Zhou Yongsheng, a neighbor of the
suspect. Pudong police confirmed the murder occurred on Monday, but refused
to provide any information, including the names of the victim and suspect,
yesterday. Chen Yu, who lives in the same residential area as the suspect,
said he knew him by sight but was not acquainted. "He is about 28 years old
and has been out of work for a long time," Chen said, adding that the victim
recently graduated from university. Chen said the pair, both of whom are
Shanghai natives, got to know each other online three months ago and agreed to
meet at the People's Square on Monday night. "However, the woman demanded to
make a clear break with the man and thus a dispute broke out," he
continued. "I heard the man took a knife that day, with which he stabbed the
woman to death."
