Shanghai Electric Corp, the country's largest power
equipment and machinery manufacturer, clinched a deal yesterday to jointly
produce two 1,000-megawatt thermal power generators with its overseas partners
for a local power plant. The 1,000MW power generators are among the most
advanced ever made by Chinese power equipment providers. Shanghai Electric
Power Generation Group, the power equipment subsidiary of SEC, signed the
deal with Waigaoqiao Power Plant to supply the two huge generators for the third
phase of the plant, which is due to start operating in the first half of
2008. "The deal is a cornerstone in boosting Shanghai's manufacturing
industry to be a pillar in the local economy," said Hu Yanzhao, vice mayor of
Shanghai, who attended the signing ceremony. "Power demand by local factories
and residents grew by double digits over the past years. The new generators will
help raise supply and ease the electricity shortage in the city." The company
will jointly produce the generators with Germany's Siemens AG, and Alstom from
France, both leading power equipment suppliers in the world. Shanghai
Electric Power Generation is the world's largest supplier of thermal power
equipment in terms of both sales and number of orders since 2002, it claimed in
a statement. The company generated sales of around 10 billion yuan (US$1.2
billion) last year and claims a 36 percent share of the thermal power equipment
market in China.
