The bridge collapse accident that claimed eight lives a month ago in
Kaiyang County of Guizhou Province is one caused by negligence of duty,
investigators said Monday. The accident took place at around 5:30 on the
morning of Dec. 14 at the construction site of the Xiaojianshan Bridge, which is
part of the highway linking the provincial capital of Guiyang and Kaiyang. He
Gang, head of the provincial work safety administration, said decisive factors
behind the bridge collapse included: -- Installation of the prop stands of
the collapsed section failed to meet criteria; -- The wall of some steel
pipes of the prop stands were not thick enough; and -- Employment of
untrained migrant workers in installing the prop stands and unqualified workers
for specialized assignment.
