Beijing plans green Olympics

Landscapers in Beijing have developed new technologies to create a greener
environment for the Olympic Games in 2008. In summer, Beijing is short of
flowers but the city leaders aim to turn the capital into a city "shrouded in
green and wreathed with flowers," Beijing News reported
yesterday. Scientists and technicians with the Beijing Gardening and
Forestation Bureau said they have developed ways to enable flowers to stay in
bloom longer. The list includes chrysanthemums, roses and other homegrown
flowers. They are also studying ways of transplanting trees from forests in
the suburbs to downtown venues for the Olympics. This includes spraying powder
to protect roots and planting them in special containers. A "green roof"
project will plant plants on the rooftop of buildings near Olympic
venues.
