The Chinese mainland authorities today deported a suspected Taiwan robber
accused of making off with the funds from a Taipei bank security van that was
transporting cash on Jan. 2. An official source confirmed Li Hanyang, along
with his younger brother Li Jinzan, was turned over to Taiwan authorities at
11:10 a.m.. The two brothers were deported from the Chinese mainland at 9:30
a.m. Li Hanyang, who worked as an armored vehicle driver in Taipei, stole 56
million New Taiwan dollars (about US$1.75 million) after drugging a colleague in
the van. He later flew to Hong Kong. Mainland police authorities arrested him
in southwestern Yunnan Province on Jan. 9. He was in the company of his younger
brother who lives on the mainland. Police authorities on the Chinese mainland
have returned 123 criminal suspects to Taiwan since 2000, according to the
Ministry of Public Security. The ministry's spokesman Wu Heping said on
Tuesday the police authorities on the mainland will safeguard the legitimate
rights of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Straits. Wu said the
mainland police will make every effort to arrest and send back criminal suspects
wanted by Taiwan, who allegedly committed crimes in Taiwan and fled to the
mainland.
