Official sacked for failing to clean up south Chinese town
8/2/2007 16:34

A town official in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has been sacked for failing to clean up Baisha town as ordered, becoming the latest official to fall victim to the region's clean-up campaign.
The official surnamed Liao, formerly deputy secretary of the Baisha township committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in Hepu county, was told to take the rap for the dirty, untidy streets.
Senior Hepu county officials decided to dismiss Liao after an inspection visit to Baishan on Sunday, which found dirty streets full of litter, chaotically-organized shops and stalls and a number of illegally-built structures.
Liao will also be removed from the administrative position of township government head, county officials said.
Two district heads in Nanning, capital of Guangxi, as well as officials from other cities have already been sacked for the same reason.
Guangxi launched last September a region-wide "rural and urban clean-up project".
Liu Qibao, secretary of the CPC Guangxi regional committee, said that the project must be implemented in a way that satisfies the people and improves the region's image.
