Some people might have poisoned food in a restaurant in Zhejiang Province yesterday, sickening more than 100 people, including 30-plus children, according to the initial police investigation, Youth Times reported today.

The children, from two schools and a kindergarten in Xixi Town of Yongkang City, were rushed to hospital for poisoning symptoms after they ate steamed bread in a local restaurant yesterday morning. More than 100 others were sent to Yongkang People¡¯s Hospital continuously.

An investigation showed that the patients ate an extremely strong rat poison, which may have been added deliberately.

¡°The restaurant is operated by a couple from another city. Their steamed bread is very famous and sells well, so many people eat there,¡±a poisoned child¡¯s mother said.

The local government has launched emergency measures, including arranging 12 ambulances to send patients to hospital and transferred medicine from nearby counties and cities.

The total number of people poisoned isn¡¯t clear, said Chen Lianhu, director of Yongkang health department. The case is still under investigation.
