National media regulators yesterday commended 41 news organizations and
143 journalists for their timely and transparent coverage of rescue and relief
operations following the May 12 earthquake in Sichuan Province. Among media
organizations termed exemplary were the Editor-in-Chief's Office of the People's
Daily, the News Center of CCTV, and the People's Liberation Army Bureau of
Xinhua News Agency, according to a notice issued in Beijing. The Publicity
Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the State
Administration of Radio, Film and Television, the General Administration of
Press and Publication and the All China Journalists Association jointly issued
the notice. Reporters and editors from national and local media were honored
for their untiring efforts in the quake coverage. "The earthquake on May 12
plunged the whole nation into deep sorrow, but media workers began non-stop
coverage right away," the notice said. "In the past two months, their quick,
transparent reports played an irreplaceable role in heartening the public and
pushing forward disaster rescue and relief. "Their work also won general
acclaim in the international community," the notice added.
