Sixty migrant workers who demanded compensation for a teenager who was
injured after jumping from a factory in Ningbo clashed with 20 factory workers
on Thursday, Zhejiang Province officials said yesterday.
Yang Xunzhao,
14, from neighboring Jiangxi Province and a student in Juexi Town, Xiangshan
County, argued with his parents on Tuesday and left home.
He was found by
staff of the Juexi Jinxu Garment Making Company in a room on the fourth floor on
Wednesday morning and suspected of theft, a county government official said
yesterday.
The workers called the police. When Yang saw them arrive, he
jumped from the fourth floor. Yang broke his leg and was treated in a
hospital.
Yang's parents, also migrant workers in Ningbo, led relatives
and others from his village to the company on Thursday morning, demanding
compensation for the medical costs.
They scuffled with 20 migrant
workers from eastern Anhui Province but nobody was injured.
More than
1,000 onlookers gathered at the factory in the afternoon and the 20 workers, who
were occasionally the target of hurled objects, were taken away by the police
for their own safety.
Eight attackers were also taken away by the
police.
The crowd dispersed on Thursday evening.
