Ma Jiantang appointed head of National Bureau of Statistics

Ma Jiantang, former vice governor of China's northwestern province of Qinghai, has been appointed head of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), according to the website of the bureau.
The former NBS head, Xie Fuzhan, was transferred to head the Research Office of the State Council at the end of May.
Born in April 1958 in Binzhou of eastern China's Shandong Province, Ma Jiantang graduated from the graduate school of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He joined the Communist Party of China in July 1983.
Ma served as deputy head of the market department of the Development Research Center of the State Council from August 1993 to January 1995, and then as head of the macro regulation department of the center between January 1995 and April 1996.
He was deputy secretary-general of the State Economic and Trade Commission between May 2002 and March 2003, and deputy secretary-general of the Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council from March 2003 to February 2004.
Ma was appointed vice governor of Qinghai in December 2004.
