Manuel Alegre, Portugal's acting president and acting parliament speaker,
met with Wang Gang, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), in
Lisbon yesterday. Portugal and China share a strong will to develop friendly
relations, Alegre said. China is an important country, both politically and
economically, and plays an increasingly important role in the process of
economic globalization, he said. Noting China's growing influence in regional
and international affairs, Alegre said a closer bilateral relationship between
Portugal and China serves their common interests. He hopes that the two
countries would further strengthen exchanges and cooperation in the fields of
economy and culture and enhance contacts between the Portuguese parliament and
the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), so as to deepen
the overall relationship between the two countries. Wang, a member of the
Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice chairman of the CPPCC
National Committee, said bilateral relations between the two countries have
entered a new stage of development in recent years, marked by frequent
high-level exchanges, growing political mutual trust, deepened economic and
trade cooperation, and more active exchanges in various fields. Wang
expressed the hope that both sides would always treat bilateral ties from a
strategic and long-term perspective and promote mutual understanding and mutual
support on major issues. The two countries should also strive to score more
achievements in bilateral exchanges and cooperation and raise their ties to a
new height. Wang said the CPPCC and the Portuguese parliament have maintained
close personnel exchanges and cooperation, which has helped enhance mutual
understanding and the friendship between the two peoples. He said the CPPCC
will further strengthen friendly relations with the Portuguese parliament,
maintain their exchanges and cooperation at various levels, and make joint
efforts to promote the all-round development of the Sino-Portuguese
relations. Wang arrived Saturday for a visit at the invitation of the
Portuguese parliament.
