The tropical cyclone Hagupit which swept away from Macao yesterday morning
caused much damage to the city's infrastructures and rendered local streets
waterlogged.
The storm brought heavy showers and strong winds, flooding many low-lying
districts of the city and battering roadside trees and public facilities. Some
2,000 residences and shops were affected when power supply failure occurred in
the waterlogged Inner Harbordistrict, the city's power supplier CEM said. The
power supply recovered Wednesday afternoon.
Even six sets of the city's traffic lights broke down after the cyclone swept
the city, and the police were seen to direct traffic in some busy crossing
points so as to avoid turmoil on the road.
The severe storm also caused 218 maritime, building and road accidents, which
saw five people injured, according to the city's Civil Defense Center.
After moving the closest to Macao last night, Hagupit made landfall on
China's southern coastal province Guangdong early this morning. The Macao
Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) lowered the gale signal No. 8, which
was hoisted last night, at 9:30 p.m. and all signals were lowered in the
afternoon.
