Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong yesterday met with the British
secretary of state for innovation, universities and skills for talks on
bilateral cooperation on education and technology. During the meeting, Liu
spoke highly of the development of Sino-British comprehensive strategic
partnership relations. In recent years, the two countries have witnessed
frequent high-level exchanges and deepening political trust. They also have made
remarkable achievements in cooperation on various fields, said Liu, adding that
the bilateral relationship maintains good momentum. After 30 years of reform
and opening up, China has made significant strides in the fields of politics,
economics and society, especially making great efforts in revitalizing the
country through science and education, said Liu, who arrived in London on Sunday
for an official visit at the invitation of the British government. Liu said
that there would be great perspective for the two countries to cooperate on
education and scientific research, and hoped that China and Britain would make
full use of the existing mechanism of cooperation and dialogue, strengthen
personnel exchanges, expand fields and forms of cooperation, learn from each
other, and further boost bilateral cooperation on education and
technology. John Denham, head of the Department for Innovation, Universities
and Skills (DIUS), said that Britain values long-term, multifaceted, and
mutually beneficial cooperation with China in the fields of education and
technology, and would continue to support the existing and impending
Sino-British cooperation projects. He also expressed willingness to work
together with China to further expand bilateral cooperation. The
representatives for China's Ministry of education, Ministry of Science and
Technology, and DIUS signed a joint statement on education collaboration between
the UK and China, a joint statement on collaboration in the field of science and
education, and a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Science and
Technology and the Research Councils of the UK to promote greater
collaboration. Yesterday, Liu also visited the London Center for
Nanotechnology and the Grey Coat Hospital, a well-known comprehensive school for
girls in Britain. Liu will fly to Switzerland on Saturday to attend the 48th
International Education Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific
and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Geneva.
