Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva met with Xu Caihou, a senior
official of China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) yesterday. During their
meeting, Lula said that Brazil treasures its friendly and cooperative relations
with China and considers China an indispensable partner. Brazil and China
share similar stance on many issues and are willing to work together for the
establishment of a just and reasonable international political and economic
order, Lula said. He added that the two countries should further enhance
strategic partnership to cope with the current international financial
crisis. The president reaffirmed his country's adherence to the one-China
policy and lauded the positive development of cross-strait relations. Lula
also expressed the hope to enhance military exchanges between the two countries
as their military cooperation has got to a good start. Xu, vice chairman of
China's Central Military Commission, said that recent years have seen frequent
exchanges of high-level visits between China and Brazil and smooth development
in economic cooperation. The two countries supported each other in major
international and regional issues and made great contributions to safeguarding
world peace and promoting common development. In this year alone, Chinese
President Hu Jintao has met Lula three times and the two leaders have reached
consensus on many international and regional issues of common concern, which
greatly promoted bilateral ties, Xu said. He expressed the hope that the
exchanges between the two defense ministries and the two armies would be
reinforced, their mutual trust enhanced and pragmatic cooperation deepened to
boost their military ties to a new high. At the invitation of Brazilian
Defense Minister Nelson Jobim, Xu started a five-day official visit to Brazil
Monday.
