China willing to stem textile flood

China is willing to work with European and US trade officials to prevent a
flood of Chinese textile exports after the lifting of quotas at the start of the
year, said Yi Xiaozhun, assistant minister of commerce, in Beijing. Under an
agreement with the World Trade Organization, import quotas on textiles were
lifted worldwide on January 1. The agreement allows WTO member countries to
impose temporary measures to protect domestic textile industries. The European
Union will probably take measures to curb imports from China before the end of
the month, French President Jacques Chirac said on April 15.
