Textile talks set to resume
22/8/2005 17:40
China and the United States will hold a fourth round of textile talks soon,
China's Ministry of Commerce said yesterday. The two countries have made
progress on the issue but differences on "some matters of principle" remain, a
ministry official said, without providing details. The official said both
sides agreed to continue their talks. China struck a deal with the European
Union in June that restricts the growth of clothing shipments in 10 categories
to between 8 and 12.5 percent through 2007. The import restrictions on
Chinese textiles have harmed European textile traders, consumers and retailers,
analysts said. Some European Union countries, including Germany, Sweden, Denmark
and the Netherlands, are pressing the European Commission to relax its quotas on
China's textile and apparel products. The domestic textile sector hopes that
a deal can be reached soon to create a clear trade environment, officials
said. (Xinhua)
