Lenovo debuts in India

China's Lenovo made its debut in India yesterday by announcing that it is
considering bringing in a new brand under Lenovo to the country while
strengthening the "Think" label originally held by IBM. The world's third
largest PC maker will not only keep improving Think products but will also
introduce Lenovo into India via a new brand, Deepak Advani, senior vice
president and chief marketing officer of Lenovo, told a press conference in New
Delhi. "We are thinking of introducing another brand under Lenovo," he said.
"Lenovo has developed some good products in China which might meet the needs of
the Indian market. For example, it has worked out products for those not very
skilled in computer or for schools where many students have to share one
computer." The company is studying where the opportunities in the market are.
India's PC market grew 34.4 percent in 2004 and is expected to rise by
29.3 percent this year. Lenovo will give significant focus on India, one of
the world's fast-growing PC markets, said Ravi Marwaha, senior vice president of
Lenovo in charge of worldwide sales. "We hope the sales will grow faster than
the industry here." The company will focus more on growth markets like Asia,
East Europe and South America while also paying attention to products for small
business and consumers, a market which IBM had paid less attention to, he
added.
