Pakistani Foreign Office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam has said that the
founding and development of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is
conducive to maintaining peace in the region and the world at
large. Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf will represent Pakistan,
an observer of the SCO, in the 2006 SCO summit slated for June 15 in Shanghai,
China. In a recent interview with Xinhua, Aslam said that Pakistan was "very
happy" that the president has been invited to the summit. She said that
Musharraf is expected to hold talks with Chinese leaders on the sidelines of the
summit. Aslam said the SCO has an indispensable role in promoting regional
security and fighting terrorism. Attiya Inayatullah, chairperson of the
Foreign Affairs Committee of Pakistan's ruling party Pakistan Muslim League,
said that the SCO is playing a unique role in Central and South Asia, an area
with rich culture. The establishment and development of the SCO is conducive
to promoting peace, development and prosperity in the region as well as the
entire world, Inayatullah said. Pakistan attaches great importance to the
SCO, he said. The SCO, established in Shanghai in 2001, comprises China,
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Since 2004, it has
