Special Olympics would not exist today¡ªand could not have been
created¡ªwithout the time, energy, commitment and enthusiasm of the more than
500,000 Special Olympics volunteers worldwide. Special Olympics relies on
volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered
quality sports training and competition experience. The Special Olympics
International volunteer pool is dedicated and diverse. Volunteers include: civic
and fraternal groups, high school and college students, amateur and professional
athletes, corporate employees, sports officials, coaches, teachers, parents and
retired persons.
As the host of the 2007 World Summer Games, Shanghai will host more than
10,000 athletes, families, coaches, dignitaries and spectators from more than
150 countries and regions. We welcome volunteers to participate and contribute.
Volunteers should represent the positive image of Shanghai, showing their
genuine care for people with intellectual disabilities. Recruitment will occur
in three phases:
Phase One (2005-2006):
Volunteers should come from enterprises, both local
and multinational companies, have a good command of English and exhibit
leadership qualities. Volunteers will receive training on Special Olympics
knowledge and project management. These volunteers will be actively involved in
the preparation and events ramping up to the World Games.
Phase Two (2006-2007):
Based on the needs of each project and planning
demands, volunteers will be recruited who will work as project co-coordinators.
Phase Three (2007):
Volunteers will be involved in the host town program
and providing service and guidance to all the visitors attending the World
Games.
