Yao Ming -- "The Global Ambassador of International Special Olympics"
11/6/2004 12:18

Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in attempt. "This is the slogan of Special Olympics. Yao Ming said that he was deeply move by this sentence: "I hope that everyone of this world has access to equal participation. Let you and me work together to devote every minor endeavor to Special Olympic Games."

Yao Ming is offering his love and sympathy at his best. Yesterday was the busiest day for him: attending the press conference in the morning, visiting Shanghai Changning School for Assisted Education and participating in a small-scale Special Olympic Games for intellectually handicapped students later; having lunch with the students at noon; proceeding the rehearsal of "Superstars Caring for Special Olympic Games" in the afternoon; shooting a TV program at night. The whole day did not see Yao Ming at any rest.

Yesterday Yao Ming walked into Shanghai Changning School of Assisted Education located in Hongxia Community.

The small campus was soaked in continuous laughter of nearly 100 intellectually handicapped children. During less-than-one-houra€?s visiting, Yao Ming and his young friends had a wonderful and unforgettable time.

Flower Presentation

Stepping into the school, Yao Ming made a tour around the small campus led by Zhu Yinzhen the principal.

"How many children do we have? Do they board at school? Are they also graded?" asked Yao Ming thoughtfully.

Yao Ming visited childrena€?s handcraft workshop and the rehabilitation room. Encouraged by the people around, a girl named Ding Ying presented silk flowers made by herself to the basketball giant. The girl was excited with a flushed face: "It feels so good to give him my present! But I am also a little nervous."

Dancing Together

The indoor playground was crowded with kids who clapped their hands to red and cheered aloud at the sight of Yao Ming who stepped towards them.

The little compere Zhang Wei hosting the opening ceremony of the small Speical Olympic Games should be counted as a bright campus star. She had starred the girl Mei Mei a€ˇ°the daughter of the mayor in the TV series Choice between Life and Death. Seeing Brother Yao Ming, little Zhang Wei held firmly her idola€?s hand, unwilling to let go.

Teacher Li Renjuan briefed that these students had been informed about Brother Yaoa€?s arrival long before and they had practiced the programs for the opening ceremony for months. While the dance performance was still in progress on the stage, the a little dancers' suddenly rushed towards Yao Ming, Li Ming and Albertz, holding their hands and inviting them to join the collective dance.

A fifth-grader named Zeng Xiaoyong held Yao Ming's big hands firmly and started to rotate. Yao Ming at first felt at loose ends since he had never learned how to dance. But soon he was a infected by the boy's naive and outright yock and started laughing happily himself Contest

On the small sports meet Yao Ming took part in various contests with the little athletes: relay running, cart-pushing, basket shooting, table tennis " it was in his line for Yao Ming to teach his little friends basket shooting, which was quite a piece of cake. However, Yao Ming was not very good at table tennis, which he tried to explained as "lack of practice for years".

In relay running Yao Ming performed somewhat laxly. At the beginning he ran quite slowly, holding his head high. But when he looked back, he found himself becoming the hare in the a€?tortoise-versus-hare runninga€? for he had been left far behind by the little player from the other team. Brother Yao Ming also got screwed up and began to accelerate towards the end point where he nearly knocked down a schoolmistress. Yao Ming got flushed and hurried to apologize, which caused some friendly guffaw from the audience.
