Special athletes arrive

The first athletes competing in the 2006 Special Olympics Shanghai
Invitational Games arrived in the city yesterday. A group of 14 athletes and
support staff from Pakistan arrived around 3:30pm at the Shanghai Pudong
International Airport, where they took part in a welcoming ceremony set up by
organizers of the games. Athletes from 19 countries and regions will take
part in the event, which is a preliminary contest for the 2007 Special Olympics
World Summer Games to be held in the city. The event, which starts tomorrow
and runs through October 20, includes 25 sports such as soccer, tennis, and
dragon boat racing. Competitions will be held at stadiums and other facilities
around the city. The event will have six official languages - Chinese,
English, Russian, Spanish, French and Arabic. The Special Olympics are an
international program involving year-round sports training and athletic
competition for the intellectually challenged.
