The 2006 Special Olympics Shanghai Invitational Games kicked off with an opening ceremony last night at the Shanghai Grand Stage.
The five-day sports event, which is a rehearsal for 2007 Shanghai Special Olympic Games, involves 2,100 athletes from 20 countries and regions.
Yesterday's opening ceremony was more like a three-hour party complete with traditional Chinese arts, such as Peking Opera, and modern pop performances.
Performers included local stars, such as opera singer Liao Changyong, as well as athletes attending the Games. Their energetic and exciting performance earned loud applause from the audience.
"These Special Olympic athletes call for care and love with their unique charm," said Deng Pufang, president of the China Disabled Persons' Federation.
The special Olympic torch made its way to the stage around 9pm amid cheers from the gathered crowd.
Vice premier Hui Liangyu, who is the honorary chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 2007 Shanghai Special Olympic Games, and Shanghai Acting Party Secretary and Mayor Han Zheng attended last night's opening ceremony.
Timothy shriver, chairman of the Special Olympics International, and Bruce Pasternack, CEO of the organization, were also present at the ceremony.
In his speech, Han expressed his hope that the Invitational Games will lay a solid foundation for the city to host next year's Special Olympics.
The mayor also urged local residents to do their best to show their care and love for disabled and mentally challenged people.
On saturday, the Special Olympics named five new spokespersons, including Hollywood star Colin Farrel and Hong Kong pop star Karen Mok.
The league of Special Olympics spokespersons has already boasted several global stars, such as Bono from the Irish rock band U2, tennis player Leyton Hewitt and NBA player Yao Ming.
