Young athletes of the local
Special Olympics team visited the Canadian navy frigate HMCS Regina yesterday,
two days after she arrived in Shanghai. A team of 17 members aged between
eight to 14 years had an hour-long tour of the ship. The youngsters were keen
on exploring the ship's control room, with some even sitting on the captain's
seat. "It's exciting that I could see a real navy ship. I'd only seen them in
pictures before," said Ni Maqiang, a Grade 9 student of the Shanghai Pudong
Special Needs School. The Canadian naval frigate, with 233 sailors, is in the
city for a six-day port call, and will depart Shanghai on Tuesday. Shanghai
will host the 2007 World Special Olympics.
