Nearly 20,000 people took part in
the annual Amway Nutrilite Health Run in Shanghai yesterday morning despite
heavy rain. Organizers planned for this year's run to show support for the
2007 Special Olympics, which will be hosted in Shanghai. Amway China Co Ltd
promised to donate 1 yuan (12 US cents) to the Special Olympics for each
participant in the run, and several other similar events held yesterday across
the country. The 4-kilometer run started at Zhabei Stadium. At 7:30am
yesterday, participants, led by Olympic gold medal winner Wang Junxia, ran
around the Daning Greenland and back to the stadium. "I hesitated for a while
seeing it was raining heavily after getting up but I still decided to come. It's
significant to do something for the Special Olympics," said Li Zhaohui, a mother
who brought her 10-year-old son to the run. Huang Shengwen, deputy president
of Amway China, said he hadn't expected so many people to take part in the event
due to the rain. The run was organized in seven domestic cities this year and
Amway says it expects to donate 200,000 yuan in total from the run to the
Special Olympics. The continuous rain cooled down the city dramatically
yesterday and is expected to last for several days.
