The 2006 Amway Nutrilite Health
Run in support of the 2007 World Special Olympics will take place on July 23,
organizers announced yesterday. The race will start and finish at Zhabei
District Stadium. The former star runner and world record holder in the
women's 10,000 meters, Wang Junxia, will lead the pack through the 4-kilometer
course. According to officials of the Amway (China) Co, the health run is a
charity promotion campaign as the company will offer a cash donation to the 2007
World Special Olympics following the race. "In 2005 Amway Shanghai donated 6
million yuan (US$750,187) to the World Special Olympics to be held in Shanghai
in 2007," said Nie Shirong, the company's business management executive in the
city. "We hope the health run can be an ideal platform to publicize its motto -
Equality, Acceptance and Tolerance." The company hopes to receive about 1
million participants and hold the event at 21 cities throughout China by
2007. Xu Chuang, a mentally challenged athlete, has been named the image
ambassador of the World Special Olympics in East Asia. "Taking part in the
World Special Olympics is the most important thing in my life and it has made me
brave and confident," the 19-year-old told reporters. For registration,
athletes can contact any of the Amway outlets, some Alldays convenience stores
and offices of the Shanghai Social Sports Management Center and the Zhabei
District Stadium. There is a fee of 15 yuan for each participant. A hotline
for inquires can be reached on 5447-6903.
