Shanghai Daily News

Participants in the 2006 Special Olympics Shanghai Invitational Games began leaving the city yesterday after the games wrapped up on Wednesday.

More than 2,100 athletes from 20 countries and regions participated in the games. Many athletes and coaches said the games left them with a great impression of Shanghai and they are looking forward to returning next year for the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games.

"We will have more than 400 athletes coming to Shanghai next year," said Mark Capano, head of the American delegation.

Ashley Broacher, a 17-year-old race walker, said she felt very happy in Shanghai surrounded by many athletes from other countries.

Brigit Priklopel, the Austrian track and field coach, said Chinese athletes were stronger than she had imagined.

"We have many athletes over 30, maybe they are a bit old for the 100-meter dash," she said. "But they'll be here next year."

The delegations also gave the Special Olympic organizing committee some suggestions. "I find our athletes were over-protected," said Capano. "I understand the committee's concerns about their health and security, but I think giving them more freedom is absolutely alright."

On Tuesday, China Construction Bank and the Bank of America announced they will jointly sponsor the 2007 Special Games.
