Shanghai Mobile has become a partner of the 2007 Special Olympic Summer
Games, which will be staged in October. The mobile carrier will upgrade phone
networks for the gymnasiums and provide customized mobile services for the
athletes, the company said yesterday. A total of 160 countries will be
sending more than 10,000 competitors to Shanghai. The city's biggest mobile
carrier is expanding the network capacity of the 33 Special Olympics gyms and
the 139 hotels looking after the athletes and team members. "We will make
sure that the communications will be smooth during the event," said Shanghai
Mobile, whose parent firm, China Mobile, is a technology partner of the Beijing
Olympics in 2008. Meanwhile, the carrier will provide customized mobile
services for the special guests of Shanghai, such as one-button-to-talk and
network meeting services for the athletes. An athlete can automatically call
a previously-assigned person such as a helper or relative after he (or she)
presses the assigned button on the keyboard. Meanwhile, the carrier has
launched a short message platform, which allows citizens to send greetings and
make small donations. The carrier also launched a mobile phone-based Website for
the event (http://wap.monternet.com).
