Shanghai Daily news

A total of 30 indoor and outdoor stadiums in the city were yesterday certified to hold events for the 2007 Special Olympic Summer Games.
More than 500 million yuan (US$64.4 million) has been spent building three new stadiums and restoring others.
The new stadiums are the Shanghai Sunshine Soccer Field in Songjiang District, the Shanghai Pudong Baseball Field and the Pudong Yuanshen Sports Development Center.
Apart from four other stadiums which are relatively new, 23 arenas have been renovated to host the events this year.
The stadiums have added some non-barrier facilities and the Games Management System (GMS), which will be used to score for athletes during the Games. The areas surrounding the arenas have also been spruced up, said Li Weiting, director of the organizing committee's competition department.
"We'll have a rehearsal for the stadiums around September 15, and all the facilities, the GMS system in particular, will be used during the rehearsal to ensure that they'll work well during the Games," said Li.
More than 20 competition events and four performance events will be included in the 11-day Games, the Games' executive committee said yesterday.
The four performances will include the Motor Activities Training Program, cricket, dragon-lion dances and dragon boat racing, said the committee.
The Shanghai Musicians Association has composed music for each award ceremony.
The Games, which will run from October 2 to 11, have attracted more than 7,000 athletes from 162 countries and regions. They will compete for more than 15,730 medals awarded to the first three places in events, and 12,000 ribbons for winning fifth to eighth places.
