Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng unveiled the main goals of the year at the annual
session of the Shanghai People's Congress, which opened yesterday.
In his government work report, Han said Shanghai's economy is expected to
grow by more than nine percent this year, promoting the pace of local financial
revenue.
On the environmental protection front, investment will continue to expand by
around three percent of the gross domestic product, and energy consumption per
unit of the GDP will be reduced by around four percent. As well, it plans to
reduce its discharge of major pollutants by two percent.
In addition, the expenditure on research and development should represent 2.6
percent of the GDP; the registered unemployment rate should be controlled to
within 4.5 percent; the growth rate of the consumer price index should be
controlled within three percent; and the disposable income of each resident
either in urban or rural areas should progressively increase.
